Bittersweet Movie Review: Poignant and hard-hitting, but slow-paced

Story: Forced to quit college due to financial constraints, Saguna joins her family to work on the sugarcane fields during the cutting season, a job that has is physically demanding and offers no respite to the workers.

Review: It’s been more than 8 months since a Marathi film got a theatrical release. So, the latest theatrical release makes the experience of returning to cinemas amid the new normal a ‘Bittersweet’ experience, much like its name.

Not long ago, reports of unusually high number of hysterectomies in Maharashtra’s Beed district had come to light. These were also linked to the women who migrated there as sugarcane-cutters during the peak season. Directed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan’s ‘Bittersweet’ is inspired by the story of these women. The film primarily revolves around Saguna and her family that works in the sugarcane fields in unhygienic and trying conditions.
